1. Compare screen fit and helm ergonomics
A current display with the same advertised diagonal size may not share the same housing dimensions, bracket, dash cutout or rear connector clearance as a SOLIX. Measure the complete footprint. Consider visibility with polarized glasses, touch and keypad access, viewing distance and whether a larger display blocks gauges or controls.
- Measure width, height, depth and rear cable clearance.
- Compare gimbal-mount and in-dash requirements.
- Check sight lines from seated and standing positions.
- Include any dash plate or fiberglass work in the upgrade budget.
2. Compare sonar by the fishing job
List the views you actually use: 2D CHIRP, Down Imaging, Side Imaging, MEGA 360 or forward-facing sonar. SOLIX G2 can offer strong traditional and imaging sonar capability in the correct package, but the latest accessories may require current supported displays and software. MEGA Live 2, for example, is currently associated with supported XPLORE, APEX and SOLIX G3 systems—not SOLIX G2.
If you retain an existing transducer, verify its exact model and adapter path. If you change generations, compare the total package price with a new compatible transducer rather than assuming the old hardware will transfer. 3. Compare mapping and waypoint workflow
SOLIX supports compatible LakeMaster, CoastMaster and other cartography, while current displays may add newer bundled mapping and updated waypoint workflows. Compare the waters included, chart-card compatibility, depth and shallow-water tools, AutoChart Live needs and how you move or back up waypoints.
Mapping questions that affect value
- Do your current cards cover the waters you fish?
- Will those exact cards work in the proposed display?
- Does a current package already include useful LakeMaster or CoastMaster maps?
- How will waypoints be exported, imported, organized and backed up?
4. Compare network generations—not only ports
This is often the deciding factor. Current XPLORE networking supports compatible XPLORE, APEX and SOLIX G3 units on supported software. Humminbird states that XPLORE is not network compatible with SOLIX G1 or G2. A mixed helm therefore needs careful planning; a new display can trigger changes to other heads, sonar sources or network architecture.
Do not plan from the cable alone
Ethernet connection, NMEA 2000 connection and full feature sharing are not the same thing. Confirm which data and accessories each exact display combination supports.
5. Compare complete installed cost
Use a system-level budget. Include the display, transducer, chart cards, Ethernet switch and cables, NMEA 2000 parts, power wiring, adapters, mount, dash work and installation. Also consider the value of existing compatible equipment you can keep.
