Choosing the correct Suzuki lower unit means matching more than horsepower. The SE521 covers confirmed standard-rotation DF200, DF225 and DF250 applications, with 25-inch and 30-inch shaft options and a 2.29:1 overall ratio. DF200 compatibility is limited to select 2004–2014 applications, while confirmed DF225 and DF250 coverage extends beyond that range.

For twin-engine or counter-rotation installations, the SE528 covers confirmed ZX/ZXX counter-rotation applications in the same horsepower family. The SEI replacement lower units currently represented in this Suzuki collection are new aftermarket replacement assemblies rather than remanufactured OEM gearcases. This is important because the current collection should not be optimized around “remanufactured Suzuki lower unit” unless that product type is actually added to the inventory.

The SE521 uses a 2.29:1 overall reduction ratio. SEI identifies the internal gear set as 12/22 teeth. Never select a Suzuki replacement gearcase by horsepower alone; model designation, rotation, shaft configuration and the required ratio must agree with the intended application.

Warning signs can include abnormal grinding or whining, difficulty engaging forward or reverse, metal contamination in the drained gear lubricant, water-contaminated or milky gear oil, propeller-shaft damage, leaking seals or loss of reliable propulsion. An impact can also damage the gearcase even when the exterior damage initially appears minor. Proper diagnosis should be completed before deciding between repair and complete Suzuki lower unit replacement.

Yes. The SE528 is the counter-rotation option currently offered for confirmed Suzuki DF200 ZX/ZXX, DF225 ZX/ZXX and DF250 ZX/ZXX applications. Counter-rotation units are normally associated with the appropriate engine in multi-engine installations, so rotation should be positively identified before ordering.

Saltwater can accelerate corrosion around the gearcase housing, fasteners, propeller shaft, seals and other exposed components when maintenance is neglected. After saltwater operation, follow Suzuki's recommended flushing and maintenance procedures and routinely inspect the gearcase, anodes and lubricant for signs of deterioration or water intrusion.

SEI assembled outboard lower units are covered by its three-year fault-free warranty, subject to the manufacturer's warranty terms and exclusions. Warranty eligibility still depends on using the product in the correct application, which makes accurate model and fitment verification important before installation.

Pressure testing is commonly used during gearcase service to help identify sealing problems around shafts, seals and related components. Because test procedures and allowable pressure can vary by gearcase and service procedure, use the specification for the exact Suzuki model or have a qualified marine technician perform the test rather than applying a generic pressure value.

Follow the service schedule for your exact Suzuki model and inspect the lubricant whenever impact damage, fishing-line intrusion or seal failure is suspected. Suzuki provides model-specific gear-oil maintenance instructions, including guidance for its DF150–DF300 engine family. When draining the oil, milky lubricant, free water or excessive metallic debris should be investigated rather than simply refilling the gearcase.

Confirm the engine model designation, serial number, rotation, shaft length and replacement application before installation. The current SE521 and SE528 options are not universal DF200/225/250 gearcases. Also complete all manufacturer-required installation steps, lubrication and adjustments before operating the outboard.
