Planning a 19-Inch Chartplotter Installation: APEX 19 Helm Guide
A successful APEX 19 installation begins before a hole is drilled. Measure the usable helm, map every cable path and decide how the display will be viewed, powered and networked while every surface is still intact.
A 19-inch chartplotter installation changes the working geometry of a helm. The large Full-HD display found in the Humminbird APEX 19 collection can make charts, sonar panels and network data easier to evaluate, but it also demands more mounting area, rear clearance and cable discipline than a smaller unit. Planning those details early protects the dashboard and makes future service far easier.
1. Measure the Helm Before Ordering
Start with usable space, not the overall width of the console. Windshield frames, gauges, switches, throttles, steering travel, cupholders, electronics boxes and access panels all reduce the real mounting area. A display that physically fits may still obstruct an essential control or be impossible to service.
Measure above the surface
- Display and bracket envelope
- Full gimbal tilt and knob clearance
- Windshield and grab-rail clearance
- Steering wheel and throttle reach
- Line of sight over the bow
Inspect behind the surface
- Structural supports and fasteners
- Depth for connectors and cable bends
- Access for hands and tools
- Existing harnesses, plumbing and steering
- Dry routing paths and service loops
Photograph both sides of the helm and record dimensions. If the display is replacing another unit, do not assume the old cutout can be enlarged safely. Check edge distance, panel strength and the exact APEX 19 in-dash template before committing to the location.
2. Choose Gimbal or In-Dash Mounting

Gimbal-mount planning
A gimbal bracket preserves adjustability, which can be valuable on a boat operated from different positions or in changing sunlight. Test the complete arc before drilling. The display must not contact the windshield, and the bracket base must sit on a surface strong enough for the unit and dynamic loads created by rough water.
In-dash planning
In-dash mounting provides a clean result but is less forgiving. Use only the mounting template and kit specified for the exact APEX 19. Confirm that the printed template is at 100% scale by measuring its reference square. Inspect behind the panel, mark the cutout, and have the position independently checked before cutting. 3. Check Viewing Position and Sunlight
The APEX interface can be controlled by touchscreen or keypad, so the screen and physical controls should both be reachable without leaning across the helm. Sit and stand at the normal driving position. Confirm that the top of the display does not block forward visibility and that the wheel does not hide critical screen areas.
Check the angle from the co-angler or second operator position if the display will be shared. Review reflections with the boat outdoors; workshop lighting does not reproduce direct sun. A position that allows a useful gimbal adjustment or an appropriate fixed in-dash angle improves readability without encouraging unsafe viewing behavior.
4. Plan Power, Protection and Cable Routing
Large marine displays deserve a planned electrical path. Follow the current Humminbird installation manual, ABYC guidance where applicable and the vessel manufacturer’s requirements. Use marine-grade conductors, correctly sized wiring, suitable overcurrent protection and secure terminations. The circuit should support the complete electronics load with acceptable voltage at the display—not merely show battery voltage with equipment switched off.
Keep power wiring organized and separated from interference sources where practical. Route cables away from sharp edges, heat, moving steering components and standing water. Protect pass-throughs with appropriate glands or grommets. Leave a controlled service loop so the APEX 19 can be removed without straining a connector, but do not create a loose coil that can chafe or trap water.

- External GPS antenna for in-dash use

5. Plan the Transducer and Network at the Same Time
An APEX 19 installation should not treat sonar and networking as separate afterthoughts. The transducer-included and CHO packages follow different sonar paths. Confirm the exact transducer, mounting method, connector and any adapter before sealing cable routes. If multiple displays, Minn Kota equipment, radar, MEGA Live or other Ethernet accessories are planned, draw the Ethernet topology and count ports before buying cables. Compare the intended plan with the available APEX 19 chartplotter configurations.
APEX provides dual Ethernet ports and built-in NMEA 2000 networking. Ethernet and NMEA 2000 do different jobs, so one does not replace the other. Confirm which network each accessory requires, whether an Ethernet switch is needed, and whether the boat already has a properly powered NMEA 2000 backbone.
