Step 1: Confirm That You Need a Saltwater Bow Mount
Riptide is Minn Kota's saltwater family. The Riptide PowerDrive uses a white finish and corrosion-protection process intended for marine environments. Its bow-mount position pulls the boat through the water, while electric steering lets you change direction from the included handheld remote.
A saltwater rating is not a substitute for care. Rinse the motor with fresh water after saltwater use, inspect wiring and connections, and follow the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions. If your priority is a transom-mount motor, a cable-steer foot pedal, built-in sonar, automatic deployment or power trim, compare a different trolling-motor family before buying.
Step 2: Choose 55 or 70 lb Thrust
Trolling-motor thrust is measured in pounds, not horsepower. Start with the boat's fully loaded weight: hull, outboard, fuel, batteries, passengers, tackle, coolers and other gear. Minn Kota's general starting rule is at least 2 lb of thrust for every 100 lb of loaded boat weight. That figure is a minimum planning baseline, not a promise that a given motor will suit every hull or condition.

For example, a fully loaded 2,000 lb boat produces a 40 lb minimum using that rule. Step 3: Plan for 12V or 24V Power
The thrust decision also determines the electrical system. The Riptide PowerDrive 55 is a 12V trolling motor; the Riptide PowerDrive 70 is a 24V trolling motor. A typical 12V setup uses one appropriate 12V marine battery. A 24V setup commonly uses two matching 12V batteries wired in series, which means more battery space, weight, cabling and charging requirements.

Minn Kota recommends keeping the propeller tip at least 12 inches below the waterline, and its selection guide places a 54- to 60-inch bow-mount shaft in the general range for a 28- to 34-inch bow-to-waterline measurement. Rough water may require additional shaft length.
Because the Riptide PowerDrive does not offer another current shaft length, the measurement can be a pass/fail decision. If your boat needs materially less or more than 54 inches, do not try to solve the mismatch with thrust or remote choice. Select a motor series that offers the correct shaft length.
