Nautica J-Class Travel Seascooter

The Nautica J-Class Seascooter is a foldable, dual-thruster underwater scooter developed for personal recreational swimming, snorkeling and qualified scuba-diving use. As Nautica’s Travel Series model, it combines a compact folding chassis with three selectable speed settings and propulsion speeds of up to 5 mph (8 km/h). Its equipment depth rating is 130 ft (40 m), although that rating is an operating limit rather than a recommended diving depth.

A removable 22.2V 6Ah lithium-ion battery provides up to 40 minutes of normal-use runtime or up to 30 minutes of continuous operation. Charging takes approximately three to four hours. The LCD displays battery level and the selected gear while also providing operating and warning indicators.

The J-Class measures 16.9 × 12.1 × 6.7 inches when folded and weighs 15 lb (6.8 kg) with its battery, making storage and transportation more manageable than with a fixed-frame unit. A camera mount and multipurpose mount are supplied, but the camera, camera housing and mounting hardware are not included. Choose this model when compact storage, higher speed and a replaceable battery matter more than maximum per-charge runtime.

Nautica J-Class Seascooter Features

The Nautica J-Class Seascooter combines dual-thruster propulsion, three-speed control and a compact folding design for recreational swimming, snorkeling and qualified scuba-diving use. Its key features focus on underwater performance, easier storage, battery replacement and clear operating information.

Dual-Thruster Three-Speed Propulsion

The J-Class uses dual thrusters and three selectable speed settings to reach speeds of up to 5 mph (8 km/h). Users can change the speed while operating the seascooter, providing greater control over propulsion in different underwater conditions.

Foldable Travel-Oriented Design

Both handles fold inward, reducing the stored dimensions to 16.9 × 12.1 × 6.7 inches. Combined with a built-in carrying handle and a weight of 15 lb (6.8 kg) with the battery, this compact design makes the J-Class easier to carry and store aboard a boat, inside a vehicle or alongside other dive equipment.

The folding design does not automatically make the seascooter airline approved. Always confirm lithium-battery requirements with the airline before traveling.

Removable and Replaceable Lithium-Ion Battery

The J-Class is powered by a removable 22.2V 6Ah lithium-ion battery rated at 133.2Wh. It provides up to 40 minutes of normal stop-and-start use or up to 30 minutes of continuous operation.

A full recharge takes approximately three to four hours using the specified charger. The battery can also be replaced with the compatible Nautica NZS21 J-Class battery.

LCD Status and Warning Display

The integrated LCD provides important operating information while the seascooter is in use. It displays the selected speed setting and remaining battery capacity, allowing the operator to monitor performance more easily.

The display also provides warning indicators for:

  • Out-of-water operation
  • Handles that are not fully opened
  • Improperly fitted protective grilles
  • Detected water ingress
  • Operating conditions requiring attention

Always stop using the seascooter and consult the user manual when a warning indicator appears.

Camera and Multipurpose Mounts

The package includes both a camera mount and multipurpose mount, allowing compatible accessories to be attached to the J-Class. The user manual lists compatibility with GoPro HERO 3 through HERO 7 cameras and other cameras using the same mounting system.

The camera, waterproof camera housing, attachment buckle and thumb screw are not included and must be purchased separately when required.

Using and Caring for the Nautica J-Class Seascooter

Before First Use

  • Read the complete J-Class manual.
  • Fully charge the battery before operation.
  • Inspect the unit, handles, handle locks, battery area and protective grilles.
  • Confirm that both handles are fully opened and locked.
  • Operate the seascooter only in water.
  • Inspect the water area for swimmers, boats, obstacles, currents and changing conditions.

Charging and Battery Care

  • Charge only when the seascooter, battery area and connections are dry.
  • Use only the specified charger.
  • Charging takes approximately 3–4 hours.
  • Disconnect the charger after the indicator shows a full charge.
  • Recharge the battery after use and at least every six months during storage.
  • Remove the battery from the seascooter for storage.
  • Keep the battery away from heat, direct sunlight, ignition sources and loose metal objects.
  • Do not use a battery that is damaged.

Freshwater and Saltwater Care

After each use, the manual instructs owners to immerse the scooter in freshwater for approximately 20 minutes. While submerged, operate it at low speed for three seconds and repeat five times. Remove the battery, drain and dry the unit, and leave it in a cool, ventilated area until fully dry.

Seals and Buoyancy

Keep the battery seals clean, dry and free of sand or grit. The J-Class is designed for seawater and may have less buoyancy or sink in freshwater, lakes and pools. Do not release it in the water or use it as a flotation aid.

Age and Operating Limits

  • Operators must be 16 or older.
  • The scooter is intended for one-person use.
  • Scuba use is limited to qualified divers following recognized diving practices.
  • Do not operate below the 130 ft/40 m equipment depth rating.
  • The depth rating is not a recommended personal diving depth.

Air Travel with the Battery

The battery is rated at 22.2V × 6Ah = 133.2Wh. Current FAA guidance requires airline approval for lithium-ion batteries above 100Wh and no more than 160Wh. Removed or spare batteries must be carried in carry-on baggage with terminals protected from short circuits. Confirm the scooter, battery, quantity and packing method directly with the airline before every trip. It is not automatically airline approved.

Is the Nautica J-Class Seascooter Right for Travel and Recreational Diving?

The Nautica J-Class Seascooter is a strong match for an experienced swimmer or qualified diver aged 16 or older who wants a foldable underwater scooter with higher speed and straightforward three-level control. Its dual-thruster system reaches up to 5 mph, while its folded dimensions make storage aboard a boat, in a vehicle or with dive equipment more manageable.

Runtime is the most important limitation to understand. The J-Class provides up to 40 minutes under normal stop-and-start use, but the manual reduces that figure to up to 30 minutes when operated continuously. Buyers wanting longer operation from one charge should compare it with the heavier Nautica Navtech 1.

Although the J-Class belongs to Nautica’s Travel Series, its 22.2V 6Ah battery is rated at 133.2Wh. Under current US FAA guidance, batteries in the 101–160Wh range require airline approval, and individual carriers may impose stricter rules. Its folding design does not automatically make the scooter or battery airline approved.

Choose this model for its combination of 5 mph performance, compact folding construction, three speeds and replaceable battery—not as a flotation device, current-navigation aid or substitute for proper swimming and diving competence.

Why Choose This Seascooter?

The Nautica J-Class Seascooter is designed for users aged 16 and older who want higher underwater speed in a chassis that is easier to store and transport than a fixed-frame dive scooter. It is particularly relevant when foldability, three-speed control and a replaceable lithium-ion battery are more important than maximum runtime.

  • Up to 5 mph: Dual thrusters provide the highest verified selling-point speed for this model.
  • Three selectable speeds: Adjust propulsion rather than operating at one fixed setting.
  • Foldable construction: The handles fold to create a more compact stored profile.
  • Faster recharging: The supplied 22.2V 6Ah battery recharges in approximately three to four hours.
  • Replaceable battery: The verified NZS21 replacement battery can be exchanged when another compatible charged battery is available.
  • Mount flexibility: Camera and multipurpose mounts are included, although cameras and camera hardware are separate.
