The OBR Mercury Verado HD prop shaft lower unit is a 5.44-inch replacement gearcase for selected Verado L6 applications. This page includes two separate application families: 1.85:1 units for selected 200, 225, 275 and 300 HP engines, and 1.75:1 units for selected 300, 350 and 400 HP engines.

New and remanufactured options are available with 20-inch L, 25-inch XL and 30-inch XXL shafts. All variants currently offered on this page are standard-rotation configurations.

Horsepower alone cannot confirm fitment. A 300 HP Verado may appear in either ratio family, depending on its original configuration. Match the engine’s original ratio, 5.44-inch housing, HD prop-shaft configuration, shaft length and rotation. Enter the complete engine serial and model numbers before ordering. Fitment for 250 HP applications must be confirmed before purchase.

1.85:1 application family

Cataloged for selected 2006–2021 Mercury Verado L6 applications:

  • 200 HP
  • 225 HP
  • 275 HP
  • 300 HP

1.75:1 application family

Cataloged for selected 2006–2021 Mercury Verado L6 applications:

  • 350 HP
  • 400 HP

Available in 20-, 25- and 30-inch standard-rotation configurations.

The exact supplier listings reviewed do not include 250 HP. Confirm any 250 HP engine with OBR before ordering. Exact engine model suffixes were not supplied and must be verified using the complete serial and model numbers.

  • Important: These are standard-rotation Mercury Verado L6 gearcases with a 5.44-inch housing and HD prop shaft. They are not replacements for a counter-rotation unit, 4.8-inch gearcase, 1-inch prop-shaft family, or non-L6 engine.
  • Select the ratio originally specified for the engine. A 1.75:1 unit is not interchangeable with a 1.85:1 unit, even when horsepower, shaft length, and housing appearance are similar. Selected 300 HP applications exist in both ratio groups.
  • Match the original shaft length and prop-shaft configuration. Engine position on a multi-engine boat does not independently confirm rotation.
  • Do not rely on an assumed 20-spline driveshaft count. Exact driveshaft splines, propeller-shaft splines, and gear-tooth counts are VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING.
  • Submit the complete engine serial number, model number, original ratio, shaft length, and rotation before ordering.

Before shipment, the selected SKU should be reviewed against the submitted engine information. This review must include the engine serial number, model number, original gear ratio, 5.44-inch housing, prop-shaft configuration, shaft length and rotation. If the customer’s information conflicts with the selected configuration, shipment should be paused until fitment is confirmed.

The product label, condition, SKU and shaft configuration should be checked against the order. The carton should be inspected and the driveshaft, propeller shaft, skeg and housing protected during packaging.

This gearcase ships without oil. It must be filled with the manufacturer-required gear lubricant before operation. OBR also requires proper shift adjustment and a ten-hour break-in period. During the first five hours, do not exceed 75% throttle; avoid full-throttle starts and extended constant-speed operation. OBR break-in instructions

When the shipment arrives:

  • Inspect the carton for punctures, crushing, moisture or visible damage.
  • Confirm the SKU and configuration before installation.
  • Photograph shipping damage before removing the unit.
  • Retain the carton and packaging.
  • Report damage before installation.
  • Do not install or operate an incorrect or damaged unit.

How to Choose a Mercury Verado HD Prop Shaft Lower Unit

The correct Mercury Verado HD prop shaft lower unit must match several specifications—not only the horsepower shown on the engine cowling. First, confirm that the existing gearcase uses the 5.44-inch housing and heavy-duty prop-shaft configuration. A visually similar 5.44-inch unit with a different propeller shaft may not be interchangeable.

Next, verify the original gear ratio. The 1.85:1 variants on this page are cataloged for selected 200, 225, 275 and 300 HP applications. The 1.75:1 variants are cataloged for selected 300, 350 and 400 HP applications. Because 300 HP appears in both groups, the serial number and original ratio are essential.

Choose the correct 20-, 25- or 30-inch shaft and confirm that the engine requires standard rotation. Counter-rotation HD variants belong to a separate configuration and should not be selected by engine position alone.

Finally, choose new or remanufactured condition and compare the selected SKU with the compatibility table. If the housing size, prop shaft, ratio, shaft length or rotation cannot be confirmed, request a fitment check before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which engines are cataloged for the 1.85:1 variants?
The 1.85:1 ME-G6-40, ME-G6-41 and ME-G6-42 families are cataloged for selected 2006–2021 Mercury Verado L6 200, 225, 275 and 300 HP applications. Complete engine serial and model numbers are still required.
Which engines are cataloged for the 1.75:1 variants?
The 1.75:1 ME-G6-43, ME-G6-44 and ME-G6-45 families are cataloged for selected 2006–2021 Mercury Verado L6 300, 350 and 400 HP applications.
Why is 300 HP listed with both gear ratios?
Selected 300 HP applications appear in both the 1.85:1 and 1.75:1 supplier families. Horsepower cannot determine the correct unit. Match the engine’s original ratio and complete serial number.
Are these standard or counter-rotation lower units?
All variants currently offered on this PDP are standard-rotation configurations. Counter-rotation HD prop-shaft units use separate SKUs and should not be selected based only on engine position.
How is this different from the other 5.44-inch Verado lower unit?
This family is cataloged with a heavy-duty prop shaft. The closest alternative ME-G6-60 through ME-G6-66 family is cataloged with a 1-inch prop shaft. Confirm the original prop-shaft specification before ordering.
Does the gearcase include oil and installation components?
The gearcase ships without oil. Fill it with the manufacturer-required lubricant before use. Inclusion of the water pump, shift shaft, anodes, gaskets and installation hardware is VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING.
What warranty, return and core terms apply?
OBR publishes a two-year limited gearcase warranty. Mariners Warehouse accepts eligible uninstalled returns within 14 days from shipment under its policy. The exact core amount and eligibility for each SKU are VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING.
