The OBR Mercury/Mariner V6 lower unit is a replacement gearcase for selected 150, 175 and 200 HP outboards. Every configuration on this page uses a 1.87:1 gear ratio. Standard-rotation options are available with 20- or 25-inch shafts for supplier-listed 1979–2018 applications. The remanufactured counter-rotation configuration uses a 25-inch shaft and is listed for applicable 1989–2018 applications.

Fitment cannot be confirmed by horsepower or model year alone. Before ordering, match the complete engine model and serial number, existing OEM number, gear ratio, driveshaft length and rotation. These OBR ME-G6 units are not SEI SE216 or SE218 gearcases and must not be selected using SE216/SE218 fitment data.

New and remanufactured configurations are covered by OBR’s current two-year limited gearcase warranty, subject to its written terms. The lower unit ships without gear oil and must be properly filled, installed and adjusted before operation.

  • Match the shaft: Confirm whether the engine requires a 20-inch or 25-inch configuration.
  • Verify the OEM number: Compare the existing gearcase number with the OEM references shown in the compatibility table.
  • Do not use SEI fitment: These OBR units are not SE216 or SE218 gearcases.
  • Do not assume 3.0L compatibility: The current OBR catalog does not publish 3.0L as the identifying criterion for these SKUs.
  • Performance gearcases: Do not assume Torque Master, Sport Master, Verado or other performance-family compatibility.
  • Required information: Provide the complete Mercury/Mariner engine model and serial number before shipment.

Before dispatch, the selected SKU should be checked against the complete engine model and serial number, existing OEM number, 1.87:1 ratio, shaft length and required rotation. If the submitted information is incomplete or conflicts with the selected configuration, the shipment should be paused and the customer contacted for clarification.

The shipment review should confirm:

  • Selected new or remanufactured condition
  • Correct 20- or 25-inch shaft
  • Correct standard or counter rotation
  • Applicable supplier-listed year range
  • Existing 1.87:1 gear ratio
  • Selected SKU and matching OEM reference
  • Complete Mercury/Mariner engine model and serial number

The shipping carton, SKU label, driveshaft and skeg area should be inspected before release to the carrier. The customer must be informed that the lower unit ships without gear oil and must be filled with the engine manufacturer’s required lubricant before operation.

When the shipment arrives, inspect the carton for punctures, crushing, water exposure or visible impact. Photograph any damage, retain the carton and packaging, and contact Mariners Warehouse before installation. If serious carrier damage is visible at delivery, refuse the shipment when possible and contact Mariners Warehouse the same day.

How to Choose the Correct Mercury 1.87:1 V6 Lower Unit

Choosing the correct Mercury V6 lower unit requires matching the complete configuration—not simply finding a listing with the same horsepower. Begin by confirming that the original gearcase uses a 1.87:1 gear ratio. Installing a different ratio can change engine load and operating RPM even when the replacement appears to bolt onto the midsection.

Next, verify the driveshaft length. The standard-rotation OBR configurations on this page are available with either a 20-inch L or 25-inch XL shaft. The current counter-rotation option is a remanufactured 25-inch unit listed for applicable 1989–2018 applications. Rotation must be matched to the existing gearcase and propeller setup; engine position alone is not sufficient proof.

Finally, compare the existing OEM number with the references in the compatibility table and submit the complete engine model and serial number. Do not select these units using SEI SE216 or SE218 specifications, and do not assume that a 3.0L, Optimax, Torque Master, Sport Master or Verado application is compatible without confirmation.

What Customers Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this lower unit fit every Mercury 150, 175 or 200 HP outboard?
No. Horsepower and year only narrow the application. Fitment must be confirmed using the complete engine model and serial number, existing OEM number, 1.87:1 ratio, shaft length and rotation.
Is this an SEI SE216 or SE218 lower unit?
No. The variants on this page are OBR ME-G6 gearcases. SEI SE216 and SE218 units use different part numbers, ratios and fitment rules.
Is this lower unit verified for 3.0L Mercury engines?
Do not use 3.0L displacement alone to select this product. OBR's current public descriptions identify these SKUs by horsepower, year, shaft length, rotation and 1.87 ratio. Submit the complete engine model and serial number for verification.
What gear ratio do these OBR lower units use?
All five current configurations use a 1.87:1 gear ratio. Confirm that this matches the original gearcase before ordering.
Which shaft lengths are available?
The current standard-rotation configurations are available with 20-inch and 25-inch shafts. The current counter-rotation configuration uses a 25-inch shaft. No 30-inch variant is included on this page.
What years are covered by the standard-rotation configurations?
OBR lists the standard-rotation ME-G6-08A and ME-G6-09A configurations for applicable 1979–2018 Mercury/Mariner 150, 175 and 200 HP applications.
What years are covered by the counter-rotation configuration?
The remanufactured ME-G6-10A-R counter-rotation 25-inch configuration is listed for applicable 1989–2018 applications.
How do I determine whether I need standard or counter rotation?
Identify the rotation of the existing gearcase and propeller setup. Do not choose rotation only from the engine's position on the transom. Ask for fitment assistance if the existing configuration is uncertain.
Does the lower unit arrive filled with gear oil?
No. OBR states that gearcase assemblies ship without oil. Fill the unit with the engine manufacturer's required marine gear lubricant before operation.
What warranty applies?
OBR currently provides a two-year limited warranty for new and remanufactured gearcases. Written terms, exclusions, installation requirements and claim procedures apply.
Can I return the lower unit after installation?
No. Mariners Warehouse's current policy states that installed, assembled or used products cannot be returned. Request a Return Authorization before sending back an eligible unused product.
Can I receive credit for my old lower unit?
OBR operates a core-credit program, but eligibility, deposit amount and return instructions must be confirmed for the selected SKU. Do not ship the old unit until return instructions are provided.
