The OBR Mercury L4 lower unit is a replacement gearcase for selected Mercury and U.S. Mariner four-cylinder two-stroke outboards. Separate configurations are available for 3-jaw applications from 1988–1997 and 6-jaw applications from 1998–2006, with 20-inch L and 25-inch XL shaft choices.

New and remanufactured versions are offered under the ME-G4-02, ME-G4-03, ME-G4-04, and ME-G4-05 SKU families. The correct unit depends on more than the horsepower shown on the engine cover. The complete engine serial number, model number, jaw style, shaft length, gear ratio, and rotation must be confirmed before purchase.

A 6-jaw gearcase may replace selected earlier 3-jaw applications only when the correct updated shift rod and conversion procedure are used. Do not assume the two jaw styles are directly interchangeable.

The gearcase ships without gear oil. It must be filled with the engine manufacturer’s specified marine gear lubricant and installed, adjusted, and broken in according to the applicable service information before operation.

How to Choose the Correct Mercury L4 Lower Unit

Choosing a Mercury L4 lower unit requires matching the complete gearcase configuration, not simply selecting 110, 115 or 125 HP. Start with the engine serial number and model number, then identify the clutch style and shaft length already used on the engine.

The earlier 1988–1997 application group generally uses a 3-jaw gearcase. The later 1998–2006 group uses the 6-jaw configuration. Twenty-inch L applications use the ME-G4-02 or ME-G4-04 SKU families, while 25-inch XL applications use ME-G4-03 or ME-G4-05. Each family is available in new and remanufactured condition.

A 6-jaw unit may be used on selected earlier applications only when the correct updated shift rod and an approved conversion procedure are used. It should not be treated as an automatic bolt-on replacement.

Before ordering, confirm the serial number, model, year, horsepower, jaw style, shaft length, gear ratio and rotation. The replacement gearcase also ships without gear oil, so the required marine lubricant and installation supplies should be prepared before the unit is operated.

What Customers Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this lower unit fit every Mercury 110, 115 or 125 HP outboard?
No. This product is limited to selected Mercury and U.S. Mariner four-cylinder L4 two-stroke applications. Fitment must be confirmed from the complete serial number, model number, year, jaw style, shaft length, gear ratio and rotation.
Which years use the 3-jaw gearcase?
The ME-G4 3-jaw application group is listed for selected 1988–1997 four-cylinder engines. The 20-inch versions are ME-G4-02-N and ME-G4-02-R, while the 25-inch versions are ME-G4-03-N and ME-G4-03-R.
Which years use the 6-jaw gearcase?
The 6-jaw application group is listed for selected 1998–2006 Mercury 110, 115 and 125 HP four-cylinder engines. The 20-inch versions use ME-G4-04 SKUs and the 25-inch versions use ME-G4-05 SKUs.
Can I replace a 3-jaw lower unit with a 6-jaw unit?
A 6-jaw unit may replace selected earlier 3-jaw applications only when the correct updated Mercury shift rod and a confirmed conversion procedure are used. It is not an automatic direct interchange.
What shaft lengths are available?
This product family includes 20-inch L and 25-inch XL configurations. Confirm the required shaft length from the engine model, serial number and existing installation before ordering.
What gear ratio does this lower unit use?
VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING — the exact ratio is not consistently stated in the available OBR SKU listings. Confirm the required ratio from the complete engine serial number and existing gearcase.
Is this a standard-rotation or counter-rotation gearcase?
VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING — rotation is not confirmed in the available product-specific OBR SKU listings. Do not assume rotation from engine position or horsepower.
What is the difference between the new and remanufactured options?
The new variants are sold as new OBR gearcases. The remanufactured variants are rebuilt OBR gearcases. Both groups are covered by the published OBR two-year limited gearcase warranty, subject to its terms and exclusions.
Does the lower unit arrive filled with gear oil?
No. OBR states that gearcase assemblies ship without oil. Fill the unit with the engine manufacturer's required marine gear lubricant to the correct level before operation.
What is included with the gearcase?
The listing identifies a complete replacement gearcase assembly. VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING whether the selected SKU includes the water pump, anodes, installation hardware, gaskets, propeller hardware or an updated conversion shift rod.
Is this the same product as the SE90-205 lower unit?
No. SE90-205 is a separate SEI product family. This page covers the OBR ME-G4-02, ME-G4-03, ME-G4-04 and ME-G4-05 application groups.
What information must I provide before ordering?
Provide the complete engine serial number, model number, horsepower, production year, current jaw style, shaft length, existing gear ratio and rotation. Do not rely on horsepower alone.
