The OBR Mercury Verado L6 lower unit is a replacement gearcase for selected Verado L6 applications originally equipped with a 1.85:1 gear ratio and 5.44-inch gearcase. New and remanufactured units are available with 20-, 25- and 30-inch shafts in standard or counter rotation.

Cataloged applications include selected 200, 225, 275 and 300 HP Verado L6 engines from 2006–2021. Horsepower and model year alone cannot confirm fitment. Your engine must match the product’s L6 architecture, original 1.85:1 ratio, 5.44-inch housing, shaft length and rotation.

Enter the complete Mercury engine serial and model numbers before ordering. Fitment for 250 HP applications must be confirmed before purchase.

Do not order by horsepower alone. Exact engine suffixes are not supplied in the available OBR listings; provide the complete engine model and serial numbers for verification.

  • Important: This is a 5.44-inch, 1.85:1 Mercury Verado L6 gearcase. It is not a replacement for a 4.8-inch housing, 1.75:1 unit, later V6/V8 Verado configuration, or another engine family.
  • Match the engine’s original ratio, shaft length, and rotation. Engine position on a multi-engine boat does not independently prove rotation. Confirm the existing gearcase specification or engine documentation.
  • Fitment for 250 HP engines, exact model suffixes, gear tooth count, driveshaft spline count, and propeller-shaft specification must be confirmed before ordering. Submit the complete engine serial and model numbers with the order.

Before shipment, the selected SKU should be reviewed against the engine information submitted with the order. This review should include the engine serial number, model number, original gear ratio, gearcase size, shaft length and rotation. If any information is incomplete or conflicts with the selected configuration, shipment should be paused until the correct fitment is confirmed.

The shipping carton, product label and selected SKU should be inspected before release to the carrier. The gearcase should be securely packaged to protect the driveshaft, propeller shaft, skeg and housing during transit.

This gearcase ships without gear oil. Before installation or operation, it must be filled to the correct level with the lubricant specified for the engine. Proper shift adjustment is also essential. Follow OBR’s published break-in procedure during the first 10 operating hours, including avoiding full-throttle starts, extended constant-speed operation and more than 75% throttle during the first five hours.

When the shipment arrives:

  • Inspect the carton for punctures, crushing, moisture or other visible damage.
  • Confirm that the SKU and configuration match the order.
  • Photograph any damage before opening or removing the product.
  • Keep the carton and all packaging materials until the unit has been inspected.
  • Report shipping damage before installation.
  • Do not install, fill or operate a damaged or incorrect unit.

How to Select a 1.85:1 Mercury Verado L6 Lower Unit

Selecting a Mercury Verado L6 lower unit requires more than matching the horsepower printed on the engine cowling. Start by confirming that the engine is an L6 Verado and that its original gearcase uses a 1.85:1 ratio. A 1.75:1 gearcase is not an interchangeable substitute, even when the housings appear similar.

Next, confirm the gearcase diameter. This OBR product family uses a 5.44-inch housing and should not be ordered for a 4.8-inch application. Then measure or verify the required driveshaft length: 20-inch L, 25-inch XL or 30-inch XXL.

Rotation must also match the original configuration. Both standard and counter-rotation versions are offered, but engine position alone is not sufficient proof of rotation. Check the existing unit or engine documentation.

Finally, choose new or remanufactured condition and compare the selected SKU with the compatibility table. Submit the complete engine serial and model numbers so the configuration can be reviewed before shipment. If any ratio, housing, shaft or rotation detail is uncertain, request a fitment check before placing the order.

What Customers Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Mercury Verado engines are cataloged for this lower unit?
The available OBR listings catalog selected 2006–2021 Mercury Verado L6 applications in 200, 225, 275 and 300 HP. Fitment still requires the original 1.85:1 ratio, 5.44-inch gearcase, correct shaft length, rotation and engine serial number.
Will this lower unit fit a 250 HP Mercury Verado?
VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING. The product family is described as 200–300 HP, but the exact OBR fit lists reviewed omit 250 HP. Obtain written supplier confirmation for the engine serial and model number before ordering.
Will every 300 HP Mercury Verado use this lower unit?
No. This product is only for a compatible Verado L6 originally using a 5.44-inch gearcase and 1.85:1 ratio. Other 300 HP engines may use a different ratio, housing or engine architecture.
What is the difference between standard and counter rotation?
The internal gearcase configuration determines propeller rotation. Choose the rotation that matches the original unit. Engine position on the boat alone does not confirm rotation.
Which shaft lengths are available?
The product family includes 20-inch L, 25-inch XL and 30-inch XXL configurations. Match the selected SKU to the original driveshaft length.
Is this a 4.8-inch or 5.44-inch gearcase?
The ME-G6-60, ME-G6-61, ME-G6-62, ME-G6-64, ME-G6-65 and ME-G6-66 families are cataloged as 5.44-inch gearcases. Do not order them for a 4.8-inch application.
Does the lower unit arrive with gear oil?
No. OBR states that gearcase assemblies ship without oil. Fill the unit with the manufacturer-required gear oil and follow OBR break-in procedures before normal operation.
What warranty, return and core terms apply?
OBR provides a two-year limited gearcase warranty. Mariners Warehouse accepts eligible uninstalled returns within 14 days from shipment under its published policy. VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING the exact core amount, eligibility and return deadline for the selected SKU.
