The SEI SE218 Mercury 3.0L counter-rotation lower unit is a new aftermarket replacement gearcase for selected Mercury 3.0L V6 outboards with serial number 1B504989 and below. It is designed specifically for applications requiring counter/left-hand rotation and is available in 1.75:1 and 1.62:1 gear-ratio configurations.

Regular SE218 configurations use a 13-spline one-piece driveshaft in the listed 25-inch or 30-inch length. Stub/Alpha configurations are available for applicable original 8-spline arrangements, but they require a compatible OE upper driveshaft purchased separately.

Fitment cannot be determined by displacement, horsepower, model year or engine position alone. Before ordering, verify the complete engine serial number, required rotation, existing gear ratio, driveshaft length and spline configuration.

The SE218 does not replace a Torque Master, Torque Master 2 or Sport Master gearcase. If the application requires standard/right-hand rotation, review the SEI SE216 instead.

The SE218 is intended for selected Mercury 3.0L V6 outboards requiring a counter/left-hand rotation lower unit.

Confirmed family-level requirements:

  • Engine serial number 1B504989 and below
  • Counter/left-hand rotation
  • Existing 1.75:1 or 1.62:1 gear ratio
  • Matching driveshaft length and spline arrangement
  • Standard-style gearcase rather than Torque Master, Torque Master 2 or Sport Master

Do not use an approximate model year or horsepower range as the sole fitment method. Mercury used different gearcase families within similar horsepower and production ranges. Submit the complete engine serial number and existing lower-unit information before ordering.

  • Counter rotation only: Do not order the SE218 for a standard/right-hand rotation application.
  • Do not determine rotation by engine position alone: Verify the existing gearcase and propeller-rotation requirement.
  • Serial-number limit: Selected applications must fall within serial number 1B504989 and below.
  • Match the gear ratio: Confirm 1.75:1 or 1.62:1 before ordering.
  • Match the driveshaft: Confirm shaft length, spline count and one-piece or Stub/Alpha arrangement.
  • Original 8-spline setup: Select the appropriate Stub/Alpha variant and obtain the compatible OE upper driveshaft separately.
  • 30-inch Stub/Alpha warning: SEI states the referenced 30-inch OE upper driveshaft is no longer available new.
  • Excluded gearcases: The SE218 does not replace Torque Master, Torque Master 2 or Sport Master.
  • Early water-tube coupling: For serial numbers below 0G438000, reuse the compatible existing coupling or obtain SEI part 96-116-12K.
  • Provide the complete engine serial number before ordering.

Before shipment, the selected SE218 configuration is reviewed using the engine information submitted with the order. Provide the complete engine serial number and select the correct gear ratio, driveshaft configuration and counter/left-hand rotation.

The review should include:

  • Complete engine serial number
  • Selected 1.75:1 or 1.62:1 ratio
  • Required counter/left-hand rotation
  • Required 25-inch, 30-inch or Stub/Alpha configuration
  • Existing spline arrangement
  • Confirmation that the original unit is not Torque Master, Torque Master 2 or Sport Master

If the application originally uses an 8-spline driveshaft, a compatible OE upper driveshaft is required with the Stub/Alpha unit. For serial numbers below 0G438000, confirm whether the existing water-tube coupling can be reused or whether SEI part 96-116-12K is required.

When the shipment arrives:

  • Inspect the carton before installation.
  • Confirm the package label and selected SKU.
  • Inspect the housing, skeg, driveshaft, propeller shaft and mounting surfaces.
  • Compare the ratio, rotation and driveshaft configuration with the order.
  • Photograph the packaging and product if damage or a discrepancy is found.
  • Retain the original packaging until condition and fitment have been confirmed.

Do not install, fill, modify, paint or operate the gearcase if the configuration appears incorrect or transit damage is visible. Contact Mariners Warehouse before installation.

Before operation, the installer must verify the required installation components, lubricant specification and fill level according to the applicable SEI instructions. Fitment review does not replace final verification and installation by a qualified marine technician.

How to Choose the Correct Mercury 3.0L Counter-Rotation Lower Unit

Choosing the correct Mercury 3.0L counter-rotation lower unit requires more than identifying the engine’s displacement or its position on the transom. Begin with the complete engine serial number. The SEI SE218 is intended for selected Mercury 3.0L V6 applications with serial number 1B504989 and below.

Next, verify that the existing application actually requires counter/left-hand rotation. Counter rotation is commonly used in multi-engine installations, but engine position alone does not confirm the required gearcase.

The existing gear ratio must also be matched. SE218 configurations are available in 1.75:1 and 1.62:1 ratios. Installing the wrong ratio can create a mismatch within a multi-engine application.

Finally, determine whether the application uses a 13-spline one-piece driveshaft or an original 8-spline arrangement. An 8-spline application requires the appropriate SE218 Stub/Alpha configuration plus a compatible OE upper driveshaft.

Do not select the SE218 for Torque Master, Torque Master 2, Sport Master or standard-rotation applications. Submit the engine serial number whenever any fitment detail is uncertain.

What Customers Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the SE218 fit every Mercury 3.0L V6 outboard?
No. The SE218 is intended for selected Mercury 3.0L V6 outboards with serial number 1B504989 and below that require counter or left-hand rotation. The existing ratio, driveshaft length, spline arrangement and gearcase family must also be verified.
Is the SE218 a counter-rotation Mercury lower unit?
Yes. The SE218 is a counter or left-hand rotation replacement gearcase. Do not order it for an application requiring standard or right-hand rotation.
Does the port-side engine always use the SE218?
No. Counter rotation is commonly used in multi-engine applications, but engine position alone does not confirm the required gearcase. Verify the existing rotation and engine serial number before ordering.
What gear ratios are available for the SE218?
Current SE218 configurations include 1.75:1 and 1.62:1 gear ratios. Match the replacement ratio to the existing application rather than selecting by horsepower alone.
What driveshaft lengths are available for the SE218?
The current one-piece configurations include 25-inch driveshafts in both listed ratios and a 30-inch driveshaft in the listed 1.75:1 configuration. Stub or Alpha configurations are also offered for applicable original 8-spline arrangements.
What is required for an original 8-spline application?
Select the appropriate SE218 Stub or Alpha configuration and obtain a compatible OE upper driveshaft separately. The Stub or Alpha gearcase does not eliminate the requirement for the correct upper driveshaft.
What is the difference between SE218 and SE216?
The SE218 is counter or left-hand rotation, while the SE216 is standard or right-hand rotation. Both require confirmation of serial number, gear ratio, driveshaft length and spline arrangement.
Does the SE218 replace Torque Master or Sport Master gearcases?
No. The SE218 does not replace Torque Master, Torque Master 2 or Sport Master gearcases.
Which water-tube coupling is required?
SE218 gearcases are supplied with the appropriate coupling for applications with serial number 0G438000 and higher. For lower serial numbers, reuse the compatible existing coupling or obtain SEI part 96-116-12K.
Does the SE218 ship filled with gear lube?
VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING: Confirm with SEI or Mariners Warehouse fulfillment whether the unit ships dry or prefilled, which lubricant is required and what fill procedure must be followed.
What warranty applies to the SE218?
SEI provides a three-year fault-free limited warranty for its outboard lower units. Proof of purchase and compliance with SEI warranty terms are required. Published exclusions and claim procedures apply.
Can an installed SE218 lower unit be returned?
No. Under the current Mariners Warehouse return policy, assembled, installed or used products are not eligible for a standard return. Verify the product before installation.
