How to Choose a Minn Kota Ultrex Trolling Motor

Use these five checks before comparing exact Minn Kota Ultrex MPNs.

  1. Confirm Freshwater Use and Bow Mounting

Ultrex is designed for freshwater bow-mount applications and uses cable steer with power steering. For saltwater or brackish-water operation, move to an appropriate Minn Kota Riptide saltwater collection.

  2. Match Thrust to the Fully Loaded Boat

Calculate the total weight of the boat, fuel, batteries, passengers and equipment rather than using dry hull weight alone. Wind, current, fishing conditions and hull design can increase the required thrust.

  3. Confirm Voltage and Battery System

Brushed Ultrex 80 lb configurations use a 24V system, while brushed 112 lb configurations use 36V. Ultrex QUEST 90/115 models support dual 24/36V operation, with thrust corresponding to the selected voltage.

  4. Measure the Required Shaft Length

Measure from the bow mounting surface to the waterline. Compare this measurement with Minn Kota’s bow-mount shaft guide and allow additional length when the boat regularly operates in rough water.

  5. Verify Controls, GPS, Sonar and MPN

Confirm the heel-toe foot pedal, Micro Remote, GPS and Spot-Lock functions, plus the DSC, MDI or MSI sonar configuration. Always match the manufacturer MPN before placing the order.

What Customers Say

Unmatched power steering and instant foot pedal responsiveness

Upgraded to the Minn Kota Ultrex for my tournament bass rig, and the Power Steering with cable-steer feel is unbelievable. The Spot-Lock holds rock solid even in heavy wind and current, allowing me to re-tie without losing position. The installation was straightforward, though it is a heavy unit to mount alone.

Incredible boat control with minor weight tradeoff

The i-Pilot Link integration with my fish finders makes contour tracking effortless. You get the speed of traditional cable steering combined with the modern features of electric steer. It adds some weight to the bow, but the performance in heavy grass completely makes up for it.

Lift-Assist mechanism makes a huge difference

Deploying and stowing an 80lb thrust motor all day used to fatigue my back, but the Lift-Assist cut the effort in half. The target positioning and jog feature on the foot pedal make precise movements around timber very easy. Definitely worth every penny.

Solid motor with great battery management

The Digital Maximizer really helps stretch my 24V setup through a full day of pounding heavy waves. Spot-Lock jog feature allows me to move 5 feet in any direction easily. Just make sure your bow deck has proper reinforcement due to the torque this unit puts out.

Exceptional holding power in heavy river current

Fished a deep river channel with strong crosswinds last weekend, and the Ultrex barely flinched. The heel-toe pedal feedback feels totally natural for traditional cable-steer anglers. Packaging arrived in perfect condition with all mounting hardware included.
