LakeMaster Premium shaded relief and aerial imagery answer two different questions. 2D Shaded Relief helps you understand the shape of the bottom; Aerial Imagery helps you understand the shoreline and surrounding surface environment. Used alongside contours and compatible Humminbird chart controls, these layers can make a complex lake easier to interpret.
Neither layer should be treated as live sonar, a live satellite feed or a guarantee of present-day conditions. Instead, think of them as planning and visual-reference tools. What is 2D Shaded Relief?
2D Shaded Relief presents mapped underwater terrain with light-and-shadow styling. Contour lines tell you where depth changes; relief helps your eye see the larger form created by those changes. A tightly packed set of contours may become an obvious ledge, while a closed contour may read more naturally as a hump or depression.

What is Aerial Imagery?
Aerial Imagery is an overhead view of shoreline and land features. It can make the transition between map symbols and the real landscape easier to understand, particularly on unfamiliar water. Depending on the specific imagery and water, visible context may include access points, developed shoreline, backwaters, marinas, vegetation patterns, islands and connecting waterways.
Imagery is best treated as a reference snapshot. Shorelines, vegetation, docks, ramps and water levels can change after an image is captured. Always evaluate current conditions and posted restrictions when you arrive.

A practical planning workflow
Example: preparing for an unfamiliar reservoir
First, use aerial imagery to understand major arms, ramps, coves and shoreline orientation. Next, switch to shaded relief to trace channel movement and identify points, ledges or humps close to likely seasonal areas.
Then use contours and Depth Highlight to narrow the depth band you plan to investigate. Apply Shallow Water Highlight as a visual reference around skinny water, and use Water Level Offset only when you have appropriate current water-level information.
Finally, create a short list of areas—not a rigid route—and validate each one with present conditions, sonar, visibility and safe boating judgment.
