RV Shore Power Cord Buying Guide
RV SHORE POWER CORD BUYING GUIDE
Choose the right rating, connection and reach
A replacement RV power cord must suit your electrical service and connect correctly at both ends. Length, inlet design and everyday handling matter once those essentials are confirmed.
Replacing an RV shore power cord involves more than finding a cable that looks similar to the old one. A cord can have enough length but the wrong connector, or the correct amp rating but an incompatible RV-side connection.
Use this RV shore power cord buying guide to narrow your choices before exploring the RV power cords and electrical accessories collection. Keep your RV manual, inlet details and existing cord markings available while comparing products.
1. Decide whether you need a cordset or an extension
Complete RV shore power cordset
A cordset is supplied with its specified end connections. For a detachable RV system, one end connects to the vehicle inlet and the other connects to the appropriate supply receptacle.
RV extension cord
An extension adds reach to a compatible arrangement when permitted by the equipment instructions. Its ends may not include the connector needed to attach directly to your RV inlet.
Identify which product you need before comparing prices. An extension and a replacement cordset can solve different problems even when they share an amp rating or length.
2. Match the electrical service and published ratings
Confirm whether your RV uses a 30-amp or 50-amp shore power system. Then compare the cord's voltage, current rating and intended application with the RV manufacturer's requirements.
Do not select a cord by outer thickness, color or a “heavy-duty” description alone. Check the manufacturer's documented conductor specifications and requirements for the complete assembly. If a necessary specification is missing, request clarification rather than assuming it matches your existing equipment.
3. Verify the RV-side inlet and connector family
Record the inlet manufacturer, model and electrical markings. Photograph the disconnected inlet face and compare it with the cordset manufacturer's compatibility information. The same amperage does not establish that two connector systems mate.
A SmartPlug RV-side connector requires the appropriate SmartPlug inlet. A traditional twist-type inlet uses a different mating design. If you intend to change the inlet system, have the conversion assessed separately instead of assuming a new cord alone completes the upgrade.
Two-end compatibility check: Confirm the RV-side connector first, then verify the campground-side plug. Product names such as “dual configuration” should be checked against the actual end specifications; they do not imply universal compatibility.
4. Choose enough length for a sensible cable route
Measure the route from your RV inlet to the likely pedestal position. Include the path around obstacles and the room needed for the connectors to sit naturally. Avoid a route that pulls the cord tight or places strain on the inlet.
Choose length within the manufacturer's requirements for the application. Extra cable also needs to be carried, deployed and stored. If your usual campsite layout needs more reach than a listed cord provides, check approved extension options before buying.
5. Compare angled connector designs
Connector shape affects how the cable leaves the RV. Check clearance around the inlet cover, nearby bodywork and the space below the connection. A comfortable grip can also matter when setting up or packing away.
SmartPlug describes its angled RV cordsets as designed to relieve connection strain and keep the cable closer to the coach. These are useful selection features, but the connector must still match your inlet and be used according to its instructions.
Compare the available SmartPlug 30-foot cordsets
SmartPlug 30-amp angled RV cordset — R30303A
The SmartPlug R30303A 30-amp cordset is listed in a 30-foot length with an angled RV-side connection. Consider it for a compatible 30-amp SmartPlug inlet system after verifying both end configurations and the required reach.
SmartPlug 50-amp angled RV cordset — R50304A
The SmartPlug R50304A 50-amp cordset is also listed in a 30-foot length. It is a separate electrical configuration, so confirm a compatible 50-amp SmartPlug inlet and suitable supply connection rather than treating it as an interchangeable version of the 30-amp cord.
Check the existing inlet when replacing a damaged cord
Inspect disconnected equipment for damage, corrosion, discoloration or melting around the contacts. Stop using damaged components. Replacing a cord without assessing a damaged inlet or supply receptacle can leave the underlying connection problem unresolved.
Follow the specific manufacturer's connection, disconnection, cleaning and storage instructions. Switch off the required breakers before making or breaking shore power connections. Have damaged wiring or uncertain inlet work handled by a qualified RV technician or electrician.

Frequently asked questions
Will a 30-foot shore power cord fit every campsite?
Pedestal locations and parking arrangements vary. Measure the expected cable route and review your equipment's extension guidance rather than assuming one length suits every site.
Can I use a SmartPlug cordset with a twist-type inlet?
Do not assume direct compatibility. The RV-side SmartPlug connector needs its matching inlet system. Any conversion or adapter arrangement must be specifically approved for the application.
Does a new cordset include a replacement RV inlet?
Check the exact package contents. A cordset listing should not be interpreted as an inlet-and-cord installation kit unless the included inlet is expressly specified.
